Hi Everyone,

I have been doing supply pupil support for years, I have now applied and got an interview for a post at a school I thoroughly enjoyed working at. I am a confident person BUT I am well and truly out of interview practice. Can anyone give me some good advice please, on what they are likely to ask and good points to make etc this would be very much appreciated. Thank you Lorna xx Smile

Hi Lorna,

Theres loads of information on the web with regards to interviews. Just preparation before on thinking on what questions you will be asked and questions to ask your interviewer. You probably have a head start with having work there already. Poise and confidence goes a long way.
Good luck

Hello Lorna

Glad you are getting an interview. As above need to be smart and presentable (which no doubt you are)
and to be confident on answering. A good thing is to look up what the potential employer actually do
such as if a school ie how many teachers, pupils, off stead etc.

Good luck

Thank you Both,

I have looked on-line, didn't know so much information could be had there for interviews. I have a nice outfit planned for a week Monday, and am going to get prepared this week with questions and answers. Thanks again Lorna x ThumpUp

Hiya Lorna

I kept out of this post as I haven't got any advice for job interviews, as i haven't had any for years either! And in any case I have given up trying to project an image anymore and am just me !

Anyway i wish you the very best of luck on Monday week , and I'm sure all will go well ..then you won't have time for us :( hehe

Hi Lorna, I work as a support in a primary school and I've been trying to think back to what they asked me and I do remember they were anxious to know if I was a
good 'team' member i.e. that I wouldn't be the type of person who would finish their allocation of work and then just sit back and watch others needing help to finish theirs. That seemed very important to them. They also asked had I ever worked with such a person and without naming names what did they do. Or I suppose I should say what did they not do!

I think the fact that you have already worked there will go heavily in your favour-you know the school-you know some of the children AND you know the ethos of the school.

They will probably ask you what you can bring to the school.

Be sure to take in any certificates and any extra things such as a first aid certificate if you have one (I didn't).

Smile a lot and don't be afraid to use your sense of humour---most school staff HAVE to have one as you know!

You could maybe ask if there will be opportunities to go on courses to increase your knowledge and commitment.

Can't remember if you have any young children but if you have they may ask what your arrangements are if one of them is ill?

THink about how you react to the children already and how they react to you---sometimes we just know if we are good with them!

Make a point of telling them that you can communicate with children from any background and any situation etc. e.g.

That's all I can think of for now but I'll rack my brains!
YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Hi Lorna, it might be a good idea to go on the school's website and check out the information there. It looks like you have prepared well if you can explain what you admire about the school when they ask why you would like the job. Look out for any previous positive points in the last Ofsted report and show that you have noticed them. Also make a note of any actions they require and explain that this is an area you would like to develop.

Above all, just be yourself. You have lots of experience and have lots to offer. Supply gives you the benefit of experiencing a variety of school set-ups, which can be a real advantage over othes. Good luck, Lorna - let us know how you get on XX Ailsa

Hi Lorna

Nothing to add really! I have done lots of interviewing over the years but such a long time ago now and in a completely different field. Julie's advice is good and I'm sure if you can draw on your experiences and be yourself you will give it your best shot. At the end of the day they're looking for someone who can fill their 'slot' not interviewee extraordinaire!

Be positive; you will do well ThumpUp

Thank you all so much for the good advice, I loved working where I am going for an interview and got on really well with everyone there including the children. I went in to see them recently before the holidays. They came running towards me asking if I were coming back and shouting to one another look I was back. I was so touched by their actions. This was a super place to work , everyone was so friendly and nice to work with and I was included right from the start. Thank you for all your good wishes I really hope I get this job, Its double the hours that I normally work but I will do it if there is a chance of my returning back there. I am going to start making notes and preparing tomorrow, its not until next Monday. I always say " what's for you wont go passed you " so it's in the lap of the gods, we will just have to wait and see. Thank you again, your support means a lot. Lorna xx BigGrin

Lorna

From what you have said on your latest post I would just be yourself and you will get the job with flying colours. Interviews can be nerve wracking and if you try and project a false image you will only make things harder for yourself. As a few people have suggested find out as much as you can about the school and I am sure the rest will fall into place. I interview staff quite regularly and I find that the first 30 seconds are the most important. Enter the room with confidence, shake hands and look people in the eye. If you can connect with the people who are interviewing you, then you are half way there.

Good luck.

Jackie

Hi there,

Interview went well but I did not get that job, but I got a call today I got another one instead working with a 5 year old as from next week. I'm off to Norway again tomorrow night until next Wednesday. My older daughter is getting married and my dad and I are going over for a holiday and my daughter and I are going wedding dress hunting at the weekend. Smile

I have not been on for a couple of days as I have had a nightmare time with my car. I filled my Diesel car with £53 of unleaded, A friend was at the opposite side to me and kept chatting, I was too busy chatting to notice I had picked up the green hose. Scared Gutted to say the least, my husband called his mechanic friend who towed it away and drained it. All appeared to go fine, I had gone to see my friend and had lunch with her, then went along to the school where her children are and walked with them to join in a concert for world peace in the local park. There were 3 schools there and it was lovely. I then picked up my car and took her 7 year old for afternoon tea, she loved the treat.

Today I was on my way to meet the child I am to be working with next week and my car died on me in the middle of the road in another village. Then a kind man pushed my car to the side and offered his family to run me home. I could not leave my car so I called my husband or tried to, now my phone had no signal. I am totally stranded. Then I noticed a school up the road, I walked up and asked them to please call and inform the other school of what had happened. Then I called for my husband to come and get me. By this time I am exasperated, hours have now passed and I have had no lunch. My husband said to call the AA but I just wanted to go home. He came and got me along with the guy who drained it yesterday. It stopped constantly on the way home and eventually the mechanic took my car I took my husbands car and he took the mechanics Jeep.

Its still in the garage, not sure what the problem is but he reckoned it may be grime from the bottom of the tank going through the engine. We will find out soon enough. Huh Going tomorrow to meet the little boy. Think I need a little holiday after all that. Thank you for asking. Lorna Smile
